Knowing All About Vitamin B5 Pantothenic Acid

Pantothenic acid is also called as Vitamin B5 and it is soluble in water. It is considered as an essential nutrient required for sustaining the life. Pantothenic acid is required for the formation of coenzyme-A (CoA) and it is evaluated critical in the metabolism, production of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. The chemical structure of Pantothenic acid is amide between D-pantoate and beta-alanine. This name was derived from the Greek pantothen which provides the meaning “from everywhere” and the small quantities of Pantothenic acid are found active in all the food items. Pantothenic acid is richly present in whole-grain cereals, eggs, legumes, royal jelly and meat.

This acid is commonly found in the alcohol analog, calcium pantotherate and provitamin panthenaol. The dextrorotatory (D) isomer of Pantothenic acid requires biologic activity and the levoratatory (L) form may antagonize the effects of the dextrorotatory isomer.

Pantothenic acid is used in the production of coenzyme A and it acts as an acyl group carrier to form acetyl-CoA and other similar composites. This act involves the transportation of atom inside the cell. The transformation of the carbon atoms by the coenzyme A is an important process in the cellular respiration and bioproduction of may essential compounds like fatty acids, cholesterol and acetylcholine.

Pantothenic acid is considered as an essential element is all forms of life because of the participation in the wide array of biological roles. Pantothenic acid has existence of various numbers of deficiencies. This acid is considered important for a healthy pregnancy. Pantothenic acid is found in small quantities in most of the food and it is found in high quantities like whole grain and eggs. Existence of Pantothenic acid in the dietary supplements as calcium D-pantotherate and some companies are adding this acid in the beverages. Recent studies have revealed that the gut bacteria present in the body of human can generate Pantothenic acid.

Pantothenate in the form of pantethine is said to be more energetic form of the vitamin in the body and it remains unstable at high temperature or storage for longer periods. Hence calcium Pantothenate is the usual form of vitamin B5 and it is sold as a dietary supplement. Proportion of 10mg of calcium panthothenate is equal to 9.2mg of Pantothenic acid. Studies have revealed that the deficiency of Pantothenic acid is exclusively uncommon. Symptoms like starvation and limited volunteer trials are determined to be the deficiency of Pantothenic acid. These deficiencies are related to the deficiencies of vitamin B. Minor deficiencies like allergies, fatigue, and abdominal pain prevail due to lack of Pantothenic acid. Major conditions like adrenal insufficiency and hepatic encephalopathy arise due to the deficiency in Pantothenic acid.

Abnormal sensations in the soles of the feet were reported as a common deficiency arising due to Pantothenic acid. Studies have revealed that 28 out of 33 patients when treated with alpha-lipoic acid for peripheral polyneuropathy have reported improvement with the combination of Pantothenic acid. Clinical studies have revealed that diabetic neuropathy prevails due to the existence of latent prediabetic metabolic disturbances and the usage of Pantothenic acid helps in the cure of the disease.
